FAQs

Choosing your luggage

What capacity should I choose for the length of my trip?

Allow 20 to 30 litres for two nights, 40 to 55 litres for a week travelling solo, and 60 litres and over for a long stay or for two. Beyond that, a full bag becomes hard to carry by hand: better to switch to a wheeled model.

A bag that's too big always gets filled, and ends up over the size limit at check-in. Choose for the actual length of your trip, not for a safety margin.

Does this bag fit as hand luggage?

Each product page gives the dimensions in centimetres. Airlines measure dimensions, not litres: a bag rated at 40 L can exceed the limit if it's too deep.

The size limit ranges from 55 x 40 x 20 cm to 55 x 35 x 25 cm depending on the airline, and the underseat bag allowed by low-cost airlines is often around 40 x 20 x 25 cm. Always compare with your airline's smallest dimension.

A soft bag keeps one advantage: it squashes down a few centimetres in the sizer, which a hard shell can't do.

Travel bag, backpack or wheeled model?

The right choice is made on the real journey, not on theoretical comfort. The classic travel bag is carried by hand or on the shoulder, and folds flat when empty. The backpack frees your hands: it makes sense as soon as there are stairs, connections or cobbles.

Wheels spare your back on smooth floors and become a nuisance everywhere else. On a mixed journey, a model you can also carry on your shoulder saves you dragging a bag that jolts at every join.

Which material is the most hard-wearing?

Polyester and nylon take the knocks of the hold and dry quickly. Coated Oxford stands up to rain and wet floors. Leather ages well but weighs more: it's worth it for a business trip, less so for a flight with a tight baggage allowance.

Watch out for the difference between waterproof and water-repellent: a water-repellent fabric shrugs off a shower, not an hour of rain. Waterproofing depends on the seams and the zip as much as on the fabric.

How can I tell if a backpack will be comfortable?

It's not the weight that tires you, it's how it's spread. A hip belt shifts most of the load onto your pelvis: your shoulders only keep it steady. Over thirty litres, no bag is comfortable to carry without one.

Then look at the back: a ventilated panel avoids a soaked shirt. And adjust the hip belt BEFORE the shoulder straps — the other way round, the load stays on your shoulders whatever you do.

Which bag for a child?

The accepted rule puts a loaded bag at around ten per cent of the child's weight. The volume should match their age, not the amount of things you'd like them to carry.

The real test is whether they can use it alone: straps they can adjust themselves, zips with big pullers, an outer pocket they can reach without taking the bag off. Anything that depends on an adult ends up carried by hand.

How do I carry liquids in the cabin?

Bottles must fit in a one-litre clear bag, each under 100 ml. A cabin-size wash bag saves you unpacking everything at security, and a clear wash bag speeds things up even more.

Wrap each bottle top in cling film: it's the pressure in the hold, not the jolts, that makes them leak. A waterproof lining does the rest.

Can I take a power bank on a plane?

Yes, but only in your hand luggage. Lithium batteries are banned from the hold, and a checked suitcase containing one will be refused.

The limit allowed on board is 100 Wh, which is about 27,000 mAh. Above that, you need the airline's approval.

Is a TSA lock worth having?

On a flight to the United States, yes: it lets security open your luggage with a master key instead of cutting the shackle. Without approval, you get back an open suitcase and one lock fewer.

A lock deters, it doesn't protect against a determined thief: valuables stay in your hand luggage. And change the factory code as soon as you buy it.

How do I avoid paying excess baggage fees?

Weigh your suitcase full, at home, before you leave. Excess baggage is charged at the desk, often costing more than a luggage scale, and you find out after queuing.

Weigh it again for the return trip: it's the shopping that most often pushes you over the allowance.

How do I care for a travel bag?

Most technical fabrics wipe clean with a damp sponge; avoid the washing machine, which damages waterproof coatings and back padding. Empty and open the bag when you get home: trapped moisture is what causes the smell, not use.

A shoe bag and a laundry bag keep the inside clean for much longer, keeping soles and worn clothes away from the rest of your luggage.

How can I save space in my luggage?

Roll your clothes rather than folding them: you save volume and the creases drop out by themselves overnight on a hanger. Put the heaviest things at the bottom, against the wheels or against your back.

Compressible packing cubes save the space of a whole outfit and stop you emptying the suitcase every time you look for something. On the way back, everything goes back in without refolding a thing.
